In honor of Charlie Chaplin's birthday Turner Classic Movies is having a movie marathon of his, and I have finally found time to sit down and watch THE CHAPLIN REVUE. Not bad so far.
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born today in 1889. He was most famous for his silent movies during the vaudeville days, which seem to be such a great movie era. MODERN TIMES is my favorite Chaplin movie.
--In 1975 he was knighted by the Queen of England
--He was married 4 times and had a total of 11 children, one of those children was Geraldine Chaplin (who starred in one of my favorite movies, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO
--His final wife was the daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neil
--"In her book, "Tramp: The Life of Charlie Chaplin", Joyce Milton asserts that Vladimir Nabokov's controversial classic, "Lolita", was inspired by Chaplin's relationship with Lita Grey."
--There is a story that he once entered a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest and came in second
--In 1925, he became the first actor to appear on the cover of Time Magazine
--It is rumored that Adolf Hitler grew his mustache to be like Charlie Chaplin
--He loved to play tennis
--in 1977 he passed away in his sleep on Christmas day
